It was not only me who felt amazed on entering the gallery. Azuma did not try too hard because of the last AMPG exhibition, nor did he fall into sentimentality and simply enjoy looking back over the past two years. He showed an artwork which was very simple, composed only of a pine tree and a device for turning it. He did not even prepare a concept sheet. He used only the front part of the gallery space to show one artwork and a movie - a really simple composition. A pine tree was used for this artwork, just as in the first AMPG, "SHIKI 2" in April 2007. To describe it simply, a 38-year-old pine tree fixed by a bolt was rapidly rotated. Azuma said a more rapid rotation would prevent us from recognizing it as a pine tree. Needless to say, it is absolutely impossible to see a rapidly rotating pine tree in nature. Previously, he had moved a plant on a planter at 2km per hour with "Garden of Reversal 2 (walking garden)" in September 2007; however, the impact of that on viewers is nothing compared to this new work. As represented by "Pine tree forest Folding Screen" by Tohaku Hasegawa, a pair of six-paneled screens of the Momoyama period, the pine tree has always had a subtle and profound image in Japan. He rotates the pine tree. There is nothing subtle or profound about this - he just keeps rotating a pine tree. This kind of humorous imagination is his best feature.
