"Plants have limitless modeling/ To express it/ Is to establish a rule for every environment surrounding them/ And to set them in, I think./(…some sentences omitted…)/ SHIKI consists of two keywords:/ One is ‘pine’ (limitlessness), the other is ‘square’ (rule)/ Pine has the most complicated formative beauty and the strongest life force/ That is limitlessness here/ To insert it into a certain form to be limited, a square is made of different materials, and causes friction" (cited from the concept sheet) Following "Shiki" (2005) to use iron framing as a form, the second "SHIKI" used ice as a form. He displayed the pine in a freezer manufactured in cooperation with Imaseki Ice Technical Laboratory. Taking a close look, it can be seen that even the oxygen coming out of the branches and leaves is frozen there. That must be one aspect of the beauty generated from the pine's activity as a plant. However, I want to focus on the irregular reflection of the pine inside the ice, which we notice when we step back and look over the SHIKI . Of course the ice is not a mirror so a clear figure cannot be seen. What we can see is a pine shape that seems to be swinging in the light, with a reflection that is faintly changing. In a special freezer visible from all around, the pine acquires a rich form without moving.
