This public advertisement contest started in 1992 as a mecenat activity of Canon Inc. The first floor in underground of Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography is the exhibition hall, where we can view the award winning works by free of charge. Here and there, a contemporary kind of work is seen, as the photography is often talked now by the context of the “contemporary art”. The tendency seemed to be especially clear in the work selected by Fumio Nanjo who is one of the regular selection committees. This would be because he recognizes his own role as the superintendent of Mori Art Museum. In contrast, Nobuyoshi Araki who is also one of the regular selection committees, selected a work based on more personal subjectivity. The work selected by Mika Ninagawa is very contemporary and cute. The work with which I was most impressed was “tire” (book/A3 /page 24) by Harumichi Saito, selected by Kotaro Iizawa that comes off from any categories mentioned above. It is a photograph where the tires of a large-scale car were focused for a long time; the screen is blurred because it is taken it moving, and makes us feel a real driving feeling accompanying the sound. The point is not the stopping tire but the moving tire in this work.
