Kiyoshi KAWASHIMA Sulphur Ⅱ 2022 Sulfa-tint, ink, guash on paper 62.5x49.6cm

Galerie Tokyo Humanité is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of Kiyoshi KAWASHIMA’s new works. Shown in this exhibition are large drawings on print works which he used drypoint and sulphur-tint, entitled Sulphur I-VI. Kawashima is known for his sculptures composed of massive materials including steel, lead, wood, and plaster. Drawings and other two-dimensional works are also considered as sculptural works formed on such materials as paper or board rather than plan drawings of sculptures.

Kawashima (b. 1951) completed the doctoral coursework of Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music (the present-day Tokyo University of the Arts) in 1986. In 1986-88, he lived in New York with the grant from the Asian Cultural Council and participated P.S.1 Project. His recent exhibitions include Galerie Tokyo Humanité (2003-2021, Tokyo), Permanent Collection 'Lived Space' Special Exhibition: Kiyoshi Kawashima (2020, Utsunomiya Museum of Art, Tochigi, Japan), Kiyoshi Kawashima−Sculpture of Revelation: Roadside・The Depth・Water Quantity (2016, Kawagoe City Art Museum, Saitama, Japan, Iwaki City Art Museum, Fukushima, Japan), Minimal/Post Minimal: Contemporary Japanese Art From the 1970s (2013, Utsunomiya Museum of Art), and ATTITUDE 2007: The House of Human Beings−Authentically Blessed Jubilance (2007, Contemporary Art Museum, Kumamoto, Kumamoto, Japan).
