OKAMOTO Atsuo CALDERA – b (detail) 2021 Basalt boulder 70.0x80.0x60.0cm

Galerie Tokyo Humanité is pleased to present OKAMOTO Atsuo’s solo exhibition of new works entitled CALDERA. In the new work CALDERA - b, chisel marks are left on the depressed surface and a pillar is risen from the depression. A depression resulting from the explosion or collapse of the center of a volcano is called a caldera which becomes a lake and leaves a trace of water after the lake runs dry. It is linked to the forms based on refraction under water, which Okamoto makes in recent years. New black granite works from the CALDERA series and the Column series are also included in this exhibition along with small works and drawings.

Okamoto creates stone sculptures in hope of reviving memories included primarily in stones which are the most fundamental existence and familiar material from the ancient time to humans. His major series Memorial Volume is a series of sculptures with organic forms in which large granite is divided into several parts and reassembled.

Born in 1951 in Hiroshima, Japan, Okamoto received his M.A. in Sculpture from Tama Art University in Tokyo. His award history includes Teijiro Nakahra Excellent Award in 1996, an award given to outstanding Japanese sculptors, and the Henry Moore Grand Prize in 1983 among others. He also received the 21st Exhibition of Contemporary Japanese Sculpture, Mainichi Newspaper Prize for the collaboration work with NODA Hiroji. His recent solo exhibitions include Ise Contemporary Museum of Art (2017, Mie, Japan), Galerie Tokyo Humanité (2014), Chelsea College of Art and Design (2011, London), and Corn Exchange Gallery (2010, Edinburgh, UK).
