TOYOUMI Kenta "In a Cell" 2021 Urushi, eggshell, aluminum panel 124.0x124.0x1.2cm

Galerie Tokyo Humanité is pleased to present TOYOUMI Kenta’s solo exhibition entitled When the Sound of the World Disappears Entirely. Toyoumi uses traditional urushi (Japanese lacquer) techniques to make two-dimensional works unlike typical urushi lacquerware traditionally made in Japan. The white image appeared on the black surface of urushi is drawn by eggshells broken into small pieces. Eggshells are as small as a pointillist painting and the image is as fine as the microcosm seeing under a microscope. The black surface is polished like a mirror so you see yourself inside the work which makes you feel like you are looking into the microcosm inside you.

Born in 1988 in Osaka, Toyoumi studied urushi in Kanazawa College of Art in Japan and received his Ph.D. in Art in 2018. He had his first solo exhibition in our gallery in 2014 followed by another solo exhibition next year. His recent museum exhibition includes Beyond the Material in the Museum of Fine Arts, Gifu in Japan last April.
