The Memorial Art Museum of Migishi Setsuko was opened in November 1998, on the site of the birthplace of the painter, Setsuko Migishi, of Onishi-shi, Aichi Prefecture. It was renamed to the Ichinomiya City Memorial Art Museum of Migishi Setsuko in April 2005 with a municipality merger. The sawtooth roofed exterior seen from the entrance reminds us that the building was once a textile factory. This is a very unique museum in that its construction is closely related to Migishi's memories. It has, in a part of an exhibition room, a studio reproduced in an existing storehouse, and water channels in openings between buildings that reflect an image of Venice. Setsuko Migishi (1905 – 1999) was a western style painter from Ichinomiya, Aichi-Prefecture. Although she has episodes of her own such as the marriage with a painter Kotaro Migishi and the bereavement from him later, she is also known for her very serious pursuit of pictorial expressions. Her style evolved from still-life and interior painting to landscape painting, and she even migrated to France (to study even more). She was the first female artist in western style oil painting in Japan to receive the award of A Person of Cultural Merit. This art museum was built at the site of Migishi's home to honor her achievements and to hand down her works to posterity. And also, it aims to promote art and cultivate interests in art among the general public. Visitors are able to see her works in various themes and periods at permanent exhibition rooms and at feature exhibitions all through the year. Also it holds exhibitions of artists who had interactions with Migishi or exhibitions called Contemporary Artist Series to introduce contemporary artists. It has workshops and lecture meetings too.
