Yasushi Kanno is a sculptor whose material is a stone. He has been searching for the meaning of carving, scraping and polishing in his works. And for this reason, his idea of sculpture has been unraveled and stones have been freed from their own heavy and solid characteristics. They sometimes seem to float in the air, flow out like water, or even melt into the air as lights. Since the disaster of 3.11 in 2011, Kanno who was born in Miyagi prefecture has been filming and recording the sceneries of the ocean going around devastated seaside there. This time in his latest work he copies these expressions onto the surface of stones. And he creates lights and shadows that shimmer on the surface of water by carving ups and downs on the stones, and this enables his works to become both ‘sculptures’ and ‘photographs’ at the same time. The stones that would live way beyond human lives would actually become tools to record visual memories of humans.
