Started in March of 2003 as an experimental project and officially opened in 2006, BankART 1929 is a Yokohama City project designed to revitalize the heart of the city by utilizing refurbished historical city buildings for the development of contemporary culture and the arts. The central space, informally known as BankART, occupies the former Daiichi Bank building, while the other, BankART Studio NYK, is housed in a defunct warehouse of the Japanese shipping company, Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK). BankART Sakura Villa was opened in a former red light district as an art and crime-prevention project. BankART has been active in the business of event sponsoring and coordination, which it has extended to a wide range of genres from art, construction and performance to music. They have received much attention for their varied, enthusiastic activities, especially in art, such as unique projects including “BankART’s school” and the artist-in-studio, as well as project exhibitions and events.
