" Focusing on a new generation in Tokyo " is held every year by " Tokyo Contemporary Art Gallery Meeting " which consists of five 13 galleries located in Ginza-Kyobashi area, showing solo exhibitions of emerging artists selected by each gallery. This time Gallery K introduces Uchiyama Shojiro, who works on iron sculptures moulding the creatures. As he reads the structure of the creature by minute observation and reconstitutes it as aggregate of various parts, It may seem as if he has a mechanism-like view of the world. However, as much as it is precise, it would remind us of the fact that a life is not a machine. And as we ask ourselves " what is life? ", Uchiyama asks himself " How can I breath a life in a sculpture?" Having made many works of insects which have the integumentary covering to separate themselves from the environment, he is now challenging to mould plants whose structure is rather open and flexible to the environment.
