Since 1985, Nobuhiko Utsumi has been working on and exhibiting his paintings which have a theme of the fundamental energy that carries out all these issues as space creation, history of life and human society. The work titled ‘ Innerscape ’ is created as a field where consciousness, body and materials affect one another, and it visualises each of our ‘ inner cosmos ’. There we can see this world’s ‘ certainty ’ - which creates physical nature, life phenomena and even human spirit - peeping through. Utsumi’s painting style was started as an original search which was induced by the Chinese-style landscape painting, particularly ‘ Hatsuboku Shan shui ’. And in 1992, his 19-metred masterpiece seemed to have reached the peak of his art work but after a sudden transformation the paintings were changed as using all the colourful paints richly blooming on the screens. However since the exhibition in 2013, he again returns to Chinese black and white ink painting, and he is opening a new ground for abstract painting which can be explained as infinitely flowing ‘ cosmic landscape painting ’ - with unpredictable dynamism. In this solo exhibition, he creates the space that evokes the macrocosm while composing the whole with outstanding art works (style of folding screens) in the centre.
