GALLERY MoMo Ryogoku is pleased to present a solo exhibition of Naomi Okubo titled Have a Party Forever. In the exhibition, Okubo developed her works depicted inside of personal issues into social issues, especially focused on dissembling using fashion with keeping her color sense conjures French painting like Bonnard.
In her first works from 2006 to 2010, Okubo had expressed anxious feeling and self-contradiction that feel when they have connection with others. At last solo show in 2011; she showed paintings that adopted ready-made images from fashion advertisements or interior magazines into. It was an attempt for her to understand paintings composition, not understanding of its contents. During the experiments that adopted various decorative motifs in her works, she succeeded in expressing the decoration in her works as a camouflage. Questioning the meaning of dissembling and considering functions of fashion and connection between it and society, the artist keeps exploring dissembling in modern society from the aspect of decoration.
Naomi Okubo was born in 1985 in Tokyo and received MA from Musashino Art University in 2011. She previously exhibited at Asian Student and Young Artists Art Festiveal in Korea and H.P. France Window Gallery Marunouchi in Toyo. This is the fourth solo exhibition of Okubo. In 2005 she won Shell Art Award and Tokyo Wander Wall in 2007.
We’re like continues to party never end.
We dress up a lot,
Flash a smile,
And decorate brilliantly.
The party looks idealistic filled with happiness,
But we are realizing that there are some things behind the glitz,
Many contradictions and lies.
While we know they are wrong,
We don’t know what we should do for them.
Then, I’m wondering what there would be
Ahead to keep trying the party even though we are confused.
