HIEDA Kazuho, Eclosion, 1959, Pigment on paper 155.3×112.3

The Museum of Modern Art, Wakayama, whose predecessor was the Wakayama Prefectural Museum (founded in 1963), inaugurated in the building of Kenmin Bunka Kaikan (the Cultural Hall for Citizens) in November 1970, and started its activities anew at the current building designed by the architect KUROKAWA Kisho in 1994. This year 2013 marks the 50th anniversary of the founding.
The unique feature of our museum is the richness of the collection, which was first shaped around artists from Wakayama and gradually expanded the relation to Kansai, Japan and abroad. It counts now more than 10,000-piece. In the Collection Galleries, the exhibits are changed seasonally with various aspects in order to introduce wide range of expression.
This time, the show starts from Summer Greetings. Our culture to find the changing beauties of nature in daily life is adaptable to art works. You will feel art much closer by looking for shifts from early summer to autumn, or sparks of life in the galleries. We hope you will also enjoy our fascinating collection in Artists fromWakayama and Japanese Modern. Approximately 100 works will be on view.
