In the last half-century, many artists tried their own expression and created a wealth of styles. In the field of painting, they are pursuing various ones. Although works are sometimes abstract or manipulating symbols, yet they were the consequences of questioning the essence of painting. The efforts to analyze painting and to resolve it into elements seem to have reached extreme simplicity. However artists seeking rich creativity have opened up new potential world. This show reveals the tendency of painting in Japan with an eye on times and artists. That will be traced with works produced during the past 50 years, dating back to 1963, when our predecessor Wakayama Prefectural Museum inaugurated. About 60 works by 50 artists will be on view from USAMI Keiji who made a brilliant debut in that year, ARAKAWA Shusaku in the same generation and artists in GUTAI drawing renewed attention, to young emerging artists like YUKAWA Masaki and TSUMAKI Ryozo.
