Editor's Note by Satoshi Koganezawa

The first solo exhibition of Tokuro Sakamoto who draws the scenery of daily life in skillful compositions in copperplate print. The screen with signs of the needle is remarkable in contrast with his acrylic paintings in which the brush-traces are rather subtle. The “Sansui” (2009) in which a swan-shaped boat advances across a lake is especially interesting in the composition using a large space. Though it originates from a work with the same title exhibited in "VOCA 2008" (Ueno Royal Museum), the acrylic painting did not convey the same feeling of quality as that of ink and wash painting. This copperplate print work seems to be more suitable to the title of “Sansui”. In contrast with many of Sakamoto's paintings which give the impression that time has stopped, time seems to move, though slowly, in his copperplate print.
