One of the world’s leading contemporary artists, Choi Jeong-Hwa has been working at the forefront of the international art scene since the late 1980s up until today. In his native Korea, he is widely known as both a designer and an artist who changed the direction and trajectory of Korean design history, which can be seen in terms of “pre-/post-Choi”. Choi himself, however, is not particularly concerned about whether his output is seen as either art or design, creating a constant stream of works that offer people enjoyable and happy experiences.
These works, which are in fact made up of a combination of extremely simple materials, convey the latent potential of creativity. Drawing on his brand of humorous, delightful magic, Choi transforms familiar everyday objects into brilliant, scintillating works of art, creating a distinctly peaceful world that offers a visceral sort of pleasure to a wide audience. This “Mother of Design” exhibition was conceived in the hope that a single piece of art would be able to bring a dose of peace to the hearts and minds of us all.
