こ の度、ギャラリーヤマグチ クンストバウ では、10 月 13 日 ( 土 ) ー 11 月 3 日 ( 土 ) まで、サイモン・フィッツジェラルド 個展 「When the Dust Settles」 を開催します。 　サイモン・フィッツジェラルド (b.1957 英国生まれ）は、イギリスで美術を学んだ後、日本の宗教を研究す る為に、1982 年に来日し、現在に至るまで京都で制作活動を行っています。 　作家は、宗教や祈りの追求を、高い精神性を感じる美術表現に希有な作家です。 　この 20 年余り続けて来たラインワークの作品は、制作に向かう際の精神統一の息づかいや、祈りの瞑想を筆 にのせてを現した作品で、作家の代表作となりました。 　今回の展覧会では、作風が一転して、ドットが繰り返し重層的に描かれた作品を発表致します。世界を構成 する基本構造を「塵」に見い出した作家は、ドットという単純でありながら無限の可能性を秘めた形を選び、 繰り返し描きました。 　本展は、ドローイング 25 点の他、30 号の油絵の作品 8 点、120 号の大作 1 点による構成になる予定です。 2008 年大阪、2009 年東京の個展以来、約 4 年振りの新作の発表になります。

When the Dust Settles
Over three years ago I visited a Greek Orthodox Christian monastery as part of my research into the concept
of continuous prayer. During meal time one of the monks read from a text in which a question was posed: at
what point does original sin enter the basic building blocks of life?
The question has remained with me ever since, not so much because of the Christian concept of original sin,
but much more so because I began to wonder at what point exactly does life begin in the vast soup of
matter that forms the building blocks of life.
I began to see dust as a metaphor for basic matter. Dust is everywhere, it is visible and invisible, rockets are
sent out to deep space to collect samples of it, scientists search for the miniscule “God particle” in a giant
particle collider, the build up of “tube-dust” on the London Underground is feared to have detrimental
effects on passenger’ s health. Leave any object for a couple of days and dust will find a comfortable place
to multiply. It can be seen floating in sunlight, and as the words from the Christian funeral rite go, “ashes to
ashes, dust to dust” , we come from dust and we return to dust.
So, after working systematically over several years tracing my breathing patterns I felt that it was time to
leave the restraints of a systematic approach to painting behind and once again work intuitively in a search
to find a way to paint this elusive “Dust” that had begun to obsess me.
When the Dust Settles is the first result of this search.
