このたび、NANZUKAは、1979年生まれのイギリス人アーティスト、オリバー・ペイン（Oliver Payne）の新作個展を開催致します。本展は、オリバー・ペイン個人としては、世界で初となるギャラリー個展となります。 オリバー・ペインは、イギリスのキングストン大学芸術学部を卒業後、１９９０年代後半からニック・ラルフとのコラボレーションアーティストとして、スケート、ハードコアミュージック、パンク、グラフィティなどのストリートカルチャーをベースにした映像作品やインスタレーション作品を中心に精力的に創作活動を行ってまいりました。２００３年にはヴェネチア・ビエンナーレにおいて金獅子（最優秀）賞（第５０回ヴェネチア・ビエンナーレ、若手作家部門）を受賞、２００４年チューリッヒ・クンストハーレでの個展、２００６年サーペインタインギャラリー（ロンドン）での個展など若手アーティストとしては異例の輝かしいキャリアを誇っています。日本国内でも、２００４年に水戸芸術館「孤独な惑星」に出品、２００８年のヨコハマトリエンナーレにも出展しています。２００９年以降、ペインとラルフはそれぞれソロアーティストとしての活動に移行し、特にペインは日本のサブカルチャーを題材とした作品を制作し続けています。 オリバー・ペインの作品は、私たちが常識だと認識している世界の文脈を、一度はフラットにし、そして大胆に角度を変える事で、私たちに新たなビジョンを提供します。昨年１１月に開催されたチューリッヒのプロジェクトスペースStudioloにおける田名網敬一との２人展においてオリバー・ペインが発表したコラージュ作品＿古いアートブックに掲載されたギリシャ彫刻を日本のTVゲーム「首領蜂（ドンパチ）」からインピレーションを得た弾幕のステッカーをデザインして貼付けた作品＿は、西洋文明が自らのアイデンティティの象徴として捉えるアイコンを、日本のTVゲームに象徴的な暴力性が圧倒的に支配する様相を表しています。それは画一的な芸術の権威が、実は妄信的に作られたものである事を暗示しているとも解釈されます。 本展は、「キャンプ」をテーマにした新作のインスタレーションとなる予定です。旧式のTVゲームを連想させるロッククライミング用のホールドが付けられたキャンバス作品は、自然の模倣という絵画のオーソリティーをアイロニカルに更新します。 棘に見立てたサイコロをレザーの上に貼った平面作品は、人々を寄せ付けないよう威圧的な存在感を放つ「エネミー」を想起させます。そして、遊ぶ事のできないコンクリート製のゲームマシーンは、ゲーム脳とも呼べる仮想現実的な思考と私たちの日常との境界を奇妙に映し出します。 本展に寄せて、アーティストが来日を果たします。4月１4日（土）19:00～22:00、アーティストを囲んでオープニングレセプションを行います。本展を皆様にご高覧頂ければ幸いです。
