"Either Photograph, painting or sculpture, but neither All"

Yuki Tawada's creation is on the borderline of photograph, painting and sculpture. Tawada scratches the surface of ink jet printed photograph directly with a needle, sandpaper and an eraser. She lets another image emerge before us, such as aura and emotions of the subjects or herself. In the progress of finding the subject to "scratch out", Tawada's photograph metamorphose into totally new media, neither photograph, painting or sculpture, although including all the elements of each expressions. Tawada made her debut by the series focusing on mass hysteria, visualizing the energy flow and the desire of the multitudes as white smoke clouding around them. In the recent series of the cityscapes, Tawada visualize the energy of cities as the lightning striking the earth. The work focusing on the city of Korean downtown was short-listed in the BMW prize at Paris Photo 2008, and attracted many attentions. In this first solo show at TARO NASU, around 20 new works including 100x150cm sized works focused on cityscapes, multitudes and individuals would be exhibited, expressing the desire and loneliness of human beings.
