art project frantic is honored to present Synthetic Toys by Naritaka Satoh. Completed by laborious pencil these works are the compounds of “ artificial and natural natural”, “mascul masculine and feminine ine feminine”, “realistic and fictitious fictitious”, “organic and inorganic inorganic” as well as “photography and painting painting”, “painting and drawing drawing”. The Synthetic Compositions are created by Satoh with the help of numerous and obsessive “transplantation procedures procedures”. Let et et’s describe several of them. Transplantation procedure # 1: “Babyness Babyness” into “Stuffed Toy Toy”.
Satoh studies babies babies: the forms of their bodies, their poses and : movements. He is attracted by their particular soft, tender volume; relaxed, light light-hearted motion; unbounded, careless attention. Baby nbounded, Baby’s naivety naivety, clumsiness and , openness are transferred in into the image of a stuffed toy, for example to in into the rubber to rubber-skin rabbit. It is a manufactured object that now takes a pose of a lively child. Baby Baby’s nature is seen in Th The Product. e The Mutant is uncanny. Transplantation procedure # 2: “a pose for official photo photo-shot shot” into “baby baby’s body body”.
Artificiality, which is seen inside a live being being, is stressed through , the strictly frontal full full-face depiction of a child. The passp passport ort ort-like photo position, which is never taken by babies, with the gaze directed straight towards the onlooker obscures the age and intentions of this “stuffed stuffed-toy toy-baby baby”. The amalgam is disturbing. Transplantation procedure # 3 3: “architectonic order order” into “mess mess”
The hair, which is a manifestation of disorder disorder, mess and , chaos chaos, are traced by, Satoh Satoh’s pencil with robot robot-like strictness. It is not a hair hair-dress. It is a hair hair-architecture, with geometric planes, straight lines and exact cut. This hair doesn doesn’t look like something that actually grows. The Hybrid is exquisite exquisite. Transplantation procedure # 4 4: “photographic document style style” into “fictitious image image”.
Most of the pencil made pictures of Satoh looks like photography. However, the represented image is obviously unreal. Thus, the image is persuading us t to be o the truth, while convincing us of being fantastic. Paradoxically Paradoxically, these works are, “documentation of fantasy fantasy”, “record of hallucination hallucination”, “facts of hypothesis hypothesis”. The Compound is metaphoric. ompound Tran Transplantation procedure # 5: splantation “pencil technique” into “painterly dimension” dimension”.
Satoh Satoh’s scrupulous pencil is like a needle needle: it scratches out an image of: distinctive lines on a white panel. His pencil is like a computer programmed laser: it leaves identical inter intervals, obey absolute vals, symmetry and guard unconditional silhouette line. In spite of the “cybernetic cybernetic” charisma of Satoh Satoh’s pensile the final drawn flesh is full of life, trembling and breath. Look at the sensitive stomach of naked woman, which calls for touch, or suture of baby baby-rabbit skin, which looks fleshy and even a bit wet. Thus, Satoh Satoh’s repetitive pencil line leads to unique picturesque visuality. His Synthesized Bodies are complex, condensed condensed, contradictive and pictorially rich. * The text was provided by art project frantic.
