オ・ソックンは1979 年仁川（韓国）に生まれ、ノッティンガムトレント大学アート＆デザイン校で学んだ。 本作品は「チョルス」と「ヨンヒ」という朴正熙政権時代の教科書に登場し1990 年代の半ばまで用いられた少年、少女を通して表現されている。
日本で言えば太郎と花子とでも言えばいいのだろうが、この2 人は、子どもたちのバイブルともいうべき教科書の登場人物として、また疑いを入れさせぬイメージのアイコンとして、多くの国民に親しまれてきた。オ・ソックンはその教科書の形式とアイコンを借りて、新たな教科書を作ろうと試みた。作品は知人たちの記憶の中で格別忘れられないシーンを題材にし、それを再現したものだ。そのシーンは個人的な記憶と言いながら、どこか見る夫々は自分の記憶と重ね、時には国全体を覆う記憶にまで及んだりもする。更に聖書にも似たかつての教科書の曖昧さや、虚妄を皮肉にも暴いていく。
植民地・朝鮮戦争・南北問題・独裁政権、色々な国家の問題を抱えてきた韓国の中で教科書のアイコンに多くの役割を担わせてきた。敢えてそういうアイコンに仮託し、個人の記憶とは何か？それが実は個人に留まらずもっと広がりがありはしないか？現在の韓国のアーティストならではの問いと懐疑に満ちた作品は、私たちの記憶の由来に対しても揺さぶりを掛けてくるようだ。
本展は2010 年暮れから2011 年始めに掛けて九州大学で開催されたグループ展「おとなりさん」に出展されたものである。東京では初の個展となる。
