ANDO GALLERY is pleased to announce "ANDO COLLECTION", a group exhibition of selected works by the gallery artists. Featured artists who have been attracting attention in Japan and overseas are Katsura FUNAKOSHI, Ken NAKAZAWA, RICARDA ROGGAN, Seiya SHINOTSUKA, and SHONAH TRESCOTT.

Katsura FUNAKOSHI
Born in Iwate in 1951. Graduated from Sculpture Course at Tokyo Zokei University in 1975 and completed Master's Course in Sculpture at Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music in 1977. In the early 1980s, Funakoshi began carving human figures out of camphorwood and, as a figurative sculptor, the artist has established a reputation in both Japan and abroad. In recent years, the artist went on to cultivate new territories of sculptural expression developing his figures to create the enigmatic, androgynous Sphinx series. In 2009, Funakoshi earned The 50th Mainichi Art Award, and The 59th Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology's Art Encouragement Prize.

Ken NAKAZAWA
Born in Tokyo in 1970. Graduated from Department of Oil Painting and completed the Postgraduate Course at Tama Art University in 1994. Nakazawa has been receiving high commendation as an installation artist. He composes installations using thin and wispy materials such as wires and nylon filaments, integrating them into the spaces of respective venues. In recent years, Nakazawa began working on paintings and in the solo exhibition in 2010 that featured his painted-works, the artist represented delicate and faintly tinged oil paintings.

RICARDA ROGGAN
Born in Dresden in 1972. Received a master's degree from Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig in 2004. Roggan has received high commendation for the series, in which the artist worked through the process; firstly, she took the furniture out of abandoned buildings and spaces in the former East Germany district, then carried them into the studio and carefully placed them to re-create the former arrangements. In her first solo show in Japan in 2009, the series "Baumstück" that picture dense trees and bushes were represented.

Seiya SHINOTSUKA
Born in Kumamoto in 1970. Graduated from Department of Japanese Painting, Tama Art University in 1996. His abstractly depicted landscapes drawn on paper using oil pastels attracted people's attention in the group exhibition "MOT Annual 2006: No Border" at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo, in 2006. The images appearing in Shinotsuka's works are the artist's "inner landscape" rooted in his own memories and experiences, which implies his main theme "the circulation of the atmosphere": one of the universal phenomena.

SHONAH TRESCOTT
Born in Australia in 1982. Graduated from National Art School, Sydney in 2004. Currently she lives and works in Berlin. The artist paints in oil, with themes derived from the history of Western European art or motifs such as landscapes and still-life which she observes directly. In the 2010 exhibition "Mankind, Nature, Myth", her first solo show in Japan, the artist exhibited paintings which represent the primordial relationships between human beings and their natural surroundings.
