Examining the cross-section of media technology, public space and civic action mediActions poses a question to the promise of new technologies as activators of social and political change. Visions of the internet and other forms of media as the aggregators of democracy and engagement in civil society have created unfulfillable utopian dreams yet as these media forms construct a new layer of the concrete spaces which we inhabit, can we discover their potential for participation, action and activism?

Based upon these questions mediActions will host a 6 week artist in residence program including participants from China, India, Indonesia and Japan, engaging in collaboration to investigate how media technologies and our thinking towards them may enable a new activation and inhabitation of the public spaces around us.

At the centre of this project is a series of workshops to be held every Saturday throughout October in which participants will collaborate with the artists to investigate about our relationship with media and public space and develop art works/events around this to be finally presented at 3331 from 30th October-11th November.

  • In these workshops we will be examining some of the following points: What is the locality which forms Akihabara? We will examine the past and future of this neighbourhood, both its façade and its back streets, its image and reality and creatively question what is it which makes Akihabara so unique.
  • What is public space? Does "public" really exist? How is the word public understood in Japan? Through art we will investigate the potentials of such spaces.
  • What do we gain from technology? Through the advancement of tools and technology the possibilities of our action and imagination have been expanded. What impact does this have upon the possibilities of expression in art in the 21st century?
