Born in 1967 Kobe City, Japan. She completed her postgraduate course work at the Kyoto City University of Arts (majored craft art). Senior professor of the Kyoto City University of Arts since 2006, and the representative artist for Venezia Biennale in 2009.

Yanagi has won numbers of domestic and international art prizes including the First Prize: Leopold Godowsky Jr. Color Photography Award (Photographic Resource Center at Boston University) in 1998, 1999 VOCA Prize, The Vision of Contemporary Art ’99 (The Ueno Royal Museum, Tokyo)Kyoto City Artist Prize, Higashikawa Prize (Higashikawa, Hokkaido), 2000 Sakuya-Konohana Prize (Osaka City), 2001 Kyoto Prefectural Artist Prize, 2004 Hyogo Prefectural Artist Prize, and the 2006 Takashimaya Art Prize ( Yanagi). Sha has also had several career of solo exhibition at many domestic and overseas museums. Yanagi is known as one of the leading photograph artists today in Japan.
