Opened in September of 1982 in Tsu, Mie, Mie Prefectural Art Museum regularly holds a special exhibition with an original theme, along with the permanent exhibit which systematically introduces the flow of art from the modern ages to present age. It also tries to inform the public through various kinds of community activities such as a remote museum, a lecture meeting, the open course, and etc.
Moreover, Mie Prefectural Art Museum collects and stores the over 5,000 works of mainly the modern and contemporary age in Western and Japanese art including the works by the artists related with Miie Prefecture after the early modern age. In 2003, the museum of Yoshitatsu Yanagihara was opened, which introduces the works of Yanagihara who is a carver to represent concreteness sculpture in postwar Japan. The sculpture collection of this museum is also widely acknowledged.
