This exhibition showcases 120 works by Van Gogh with cooperation of Van Gogh Museum and Kröller Müller Museum.

Throughout his career, Van Gogh eagerly experimented with style and technique in his work. He studied hard, was inventive and, with his ever growing talent, very capable of using materials and techniques to create the artistic effects that he had in mind. He studied anatomy, perspective, colour theory and such, knowing full well that this was a basis that he needed to master his art.

In his development as an artist, he learned a lot from other artists. Sometimes he knew them personally, like Anthon van Rappard, Anton Mauve, Henri de Toulouse Lautrec, Paul Signac and Paul Gauguin. In other cases he read about techniques and methods that were used by old masters like Frans Hals, or by a famous 19th-century master like Eugène Delacroix, and he saw their work in museums and public spaces.

The exhibition and catalogue want to give an impression in broad lines of the methods and techniques that Van Gogh used for his stylistic and technical development, and an overview of the artist by whom he was influenced in the process. The works on show were not necessarily known to Van Gogh, but give a good impression of the different working methods of artists at the time, which Van Gogh was familiar with. Also shown will be books that Van Gogh read and tools and materials that he used, such as his perspective frame.

Attention will also be paid to the research methods that enable scholars to unravel the techniques of painters, such as X-ray photography and infrared reflectography.

This is the first time that the Japanese public is given a chance to learn how Van Gogh worked and how he developed himself technically and stylistically. Indeed, no other major painter from Van Gogh's period has ever been approached in this manner in Japan.
