A red line is drawn on the floor near the entrance of the exhibition room. As one walks into the room, a huge refrigerator is found in which a vast number of gladioli are arranged. A single red gladiolus flower among the white ones reminds us of the red line we saw seconds ago. This is certainly “a striking beauty”.

Azuma's artworks can be divided into two groups: one group is formed of independent or standalone works such as the "SHIKI" series and "LEAF MAN"; the other is installations firmly connected to the surrounding space, such as "Garden of Reversal" and "The other side of Crazy RED". This exhibition, "Desolate" must be the latter, though it could easily be misunderstood as the former at first glance because of the highly independent existence of the refrigerator. In addition, because the single red gladiolus is strongly related to the single red line, “Desolate" has a notable connection to the space surrounding it. Azuma’s portrait placed between the line and the flowers also makes the overall image more striking and memorable for the viewer. Its simple composition shows us not Azuma’s personal memory, which is unknown to us, but our own memory. This sharp, loutish-looking artwork with such amplitude and strength becomes a means to recall our past memory.
