This is the solo exhibition of Natsunosuke Mise whose another personal exhibition entitled “Mongetsu-dai”, which was held at the C Square, is still fresh in our minds. It is the first time for him to present a number of his creations together at once since his solo exhibition which was held at the imura art gallery in 2008. It would be partly because he moved from Nara to Yamagata Prefecture in this spring to serve as an associate professor at Tohoku University of Art and Design. Most of the creations shown in this exhibition are Mise’s recent works which were created using suiboku and chalk. We encounter the creation entitled “Sho-getsu” (182cm×252cm, [three parts]) first at the venue. The composition of the picture, in which both things which can be seen in the distance and nearby are depicted together, creates destructive and chaotic images of the work, while shading of ink which gives us a moist image and glittering chalk contribute to adding a soft impression to it. This would be exactly one of the characteristics of Mise’s recent suiboku-ga. Many of the exhibits are small pieces displayed within frames and there cannot be found any large-size work other than another creation which is also named “Sho-getsu”. Nevertheless, it is interesting that some of the framed creations are figurative and stereoscopic artworks which are similar to the works shown in the previous exhibition, “Mongetsu-dai”. Although this exhibition is held for only one week, it would provide you with a valuable opportunity to find the current trend in the field of modern art. (Translated by Nozomi Nakayama)
