Spiral was opened in October of 1985 in Aoyama, Tokyo as a cultural-arts complex founded by WACOAL HOLDINGS CORPORATION, aimed at "establishing a culture business" in which various exhibitions and events concerned with contemporary art are held with "Unite of life and the art" as the theme. It actively introduces domestic and foreign emerging artists, and aims to take the role of reflecting the current situation in the world of art. Spiral received the R.S. Reynolds Memorial Award in 1987. The architecture is highly regarded as a space that flexibly displays the contemporary art, by means such as the esplanade (long stairs) rising to the third floor from the entrance, and the cylindrical atrium with its spiral-slope, and the exhibition space in a hall 20 meters wide.
