Transparence –Flower 06–2019, urushi, metal leaf on aluminum composite panel, 40x100x0.5cm

Galerie Tokyo Humanité is pleased to announce OKA Tomoyo' solo exhibition entitled URUSHI SURFACE IV - In the Depths -. Included in this exhibition are approx. 10 urushi works on panels and box-shaped objects as well as an elongated shape similar to a crosspiece which appears for the first time in Oka's exhibition with us.

By maximizing the effect of transparency of urushi, Oka makes it possible to create a multilayered pattern inside of a thin panel to give the pattern complex depth. The lower layer has a black pattern drawn with black urushi on metal leaves. After several layers of urushi, a transparent pattern with embossing effect is drawn using a traditional urushi technique. Finally, the surface is covered by the layer of urushi with high transparency, so the surface is as smooth and flat as water.

Oka (b. 1986) studied traditional techniques of urushi, the Japanese lacquer, at Kanazawa Collage of Art and received her Ph.D in art in 2015. Her recent exhibition history includes Urushi Today 2018, Nihombashi Mitsukoshi, Tokyo and Future of Urushi, 2015, Takahashi Setsuro Art Museum of Azumino, Japan.
