Ken Nakazawa was born in Tokyo in 1970 and graduated from Tama Art University with a postgraduate degree in oil painting. His major exhibitions include “MOT Annual 1999: Modest Radicalism” (Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo) and “YOKOHAMA 2001: International Triennale of Contemporary Art” (Pacifico Yokohama). Nakazawa has won acclaim in Japan and internationally with installation works using visually insubstantial materials, such as wires and nylon filaments, to meld his works with the space of the venue.

In this exhibition, Nakazawa displays a new installation work entitled “Four sided figures.” Inspired by the image of a fence, the installation is composed only of 3mm-diameter steel rods, the barest minimum of materials. The basic component of the installation is an object formed of two rectangular frames (200cm by 40cm) placed, one above the other, parallel to the floor. Welded to the frames in the manner of supports are some 20 vertical steel bars about 65cm high. A total 21 such objects, nearly the same in form, are loosely arranged in rows. When viewed from a short distance away, the individual objects mesh and interact, forming a whole that appears like a line drawing.

In Ken NAKAZAWA, the artist’s collected works published last year, Futoshi Hoshino writes as follows: “Endless alternation of movement has central importance in Nakazawa’s works. Forms composed of simple lines and planes appear, at times, as shapes invested with meaning, and at times, as mere physical objects. In this way, his works criticize our cognitive function itself. People who look carefully at “Four Rows” and other recent Nakazawa pieces will experience the above phenomenon. Still, the trigger for this experience is not our adherence to arithmetic rules nor our faith in what we see before our eyes. The flickering configurations perceived are a product of this artist’s unmistakable reason.”
