Nobuhiko Utsumi has been working consistently with the theme ‘Innerscape’ since 1985. His works can be looked at as revived modern paintings of the traditional ‘Inkflow Painting’ that was handed down from ancient China.

By his continuous process of trial and error in Inkflow Painting, he found that there were some kind of formative forces working in the process. It was the nature itself that was revealed by ‘Ki(energy)’ which ancient Chinese painters considered as the most important element. An artist Oumok(about 734~805) from Tang Era (China, 618~907) poured ink over his body and painted on massive screens just as he dances, and he created deep and remote ground just like the sceneries under the deep ocean. Utsumi found there a very powerful counterculture against modernistic paintings and received a great impact.

Since then, he has created thousands of works of ‘Innerscape’ series. And in his collection, folding screen works have become one of his unique and original paintings. The works ‘pair of 8 panel folding screen’ and ‘wooden fan built of sixteen bridges’ that have been exhibited at Gallery K and Okuma Hall(Waseda Univ.) last three years are introduced in this solo exhibition as advanced ‘Cosmic Landscape Painting’.
