Artist KYOTARO’s first large-scale solo exhibition in seven years

DIESEL ART GALLERY (Shibuya) will be holding Clad in the Universe, KYOTARO’ s first major solo exhibition in seven years which will take place from February 24 (Fri) ̶ May 18, 2017 (Thu).
KYOTARO creates work by giving form to invisible beings from other dimensions and the powers they possess. A sense of a presence nearby or mystical experiences are important elements of her creative process. Her work is a picture plane brimming with movement, rendered through delicate, meticulous strokes that create textures of water drops, air bubbles, and hair, and that form subject matters such as light, deities, beasts, animals, and fairies. While adopting mainly a restrained monochrome palette of black and white, her work stimulates the spectator’ s awareness and transports them to a vibrant world.

CONCEPT:
This large-scale solo exhibition will present 13 new, large-scale works based on the theme “clothing humans would wear 100 thousand years into the future” as well as some 80 small-scale works. By thinking far into future through the process of creating unfamiliar objects that cannot be materialized, whether it be clothing made of liquid or light, clothing that encourage the exchange of consciousness,
or clothing equipped with communication features, the exhibition creates a space that explores an unknown world.
Artworks as well as exclusive merchandise such as postcards will be on sale at the venue.
A signing event will be held during the exhibition period on April 28 (Fri) 19:00－21:00.

KYOTARO was born in Kyoto in 1978. In 1998, she graduated from the graphic design course at Kyoto Saga University of Arts. Currently based in both Tokyo and her hometown of Kyoto, she produces a broad range of work such as drawing, painting, manga, and animation.
She has been actively presenting work both within and outside Japan, including numerous solo shows within the country and group shows in New York, Miami, Beijing, Shanghai, and San Francisco, among other locations.
KYOTARO’s work, which straddles both her individual artistic practice and commercial work, has garnered attention from across different fields. Her activities as of late include the design of the campaign visual for Red Bull Music Academy Tokyo (2014) and of the window display on the first floor of Isetan Shinjuku’s main building (2013) as well as participation in numerous exhibitions at venues such as 111 Minna Gallery (San Francisco, 2012), Mizuma & One Gallery (Beijing, 2011), Hwas Gallery (Shanghai, 2011), and Mizuma Action (Tokyo, 2008, 2010).
Recent major exhibitions include group shows such as Monochrome (HHH gallery, Tokyo, 2015), Global Photo Collaborations（which presented work created in collaboration with photographer Tatsuki Masaru, DIESEL ART GALLERY, Tokyo, 2013), Shinkansen Conspiracy (111 Minna Gallery, San Francisco, 2012), Seven Dilemmas̶Emerging Contemporary Japanese Artists Group Show (Mizuma & One Gallery, Beijing / Hwas Gallery, Shanghai, 2011), as well as solo exhibitions I Saw a Lot of Fairies (Mizuma Action, Tokyo, 2010) and Heaven’s Trip (Mizuma Action, Tokyo, 2008).
Major publications include her collection of works Heaven’s Trip (Kawade Shobo Shinsha, 2012), The Baby Shower Story (Kawade Shobo Shinsha, 2012), and I Saw a Lot of Fairies 2004-2010 (Erect Lab., 2012); paperback manga MWUAI (Daitokai, 2012); illustrated books Kara Pon Pon (Rikuyosha, 2013) which was a collaboration with fashion brand Ahcahcum Muchacha designer Masako Shinya, a special edition of Kara Pon Pon (Rikuyosha, 2016), and Alice in Mushroom Land (Studio Parabolica, 2015) which was a collaboration with photography critic Kotaro Iizawa.
