KOKI ARTS is pleased to announce Ryoichi Nakamura's solo exhibition, Confused Utopia. This exhibition will showcase approximately 200 works.

Identity is an important contemporary theme that is related not only to culture and experience, but to politics as well. In this exhibition, each work depicts a portrait based on real Japanese Americans who immigrated to the US. During WWII, as many Japanese Americans were sent to internment camps by the federal government, it has been said that their identity wavered between the two countries. As a grantee of the Pola Art Foundation, Nakamura spent the past year in the US doing extensive research on this topic. He became more aware of the identity theme he has been tackling for years, which inspired the creation of these portraits.

RYOICHI NAKAMURA (b.1982) moved to Berlin in 2003 (voluntarily dropped out of Tokyo Zokei University) and worked as an artist from 2004-2008. Since returning to Japan, he has been based in Tokyo, and spent one year (2015-2016) in the US after receiving a grant from the Pola Art Foundation. This will be his second time exhibiting at KOKI ARTS. Recent exhibitions in Japan include the 17th Exhibition of the Taro Okamoto Award for Contemporary Art, solo exhibitions at Gallery Tsubaki and LIXIL GALLERY.
