From Exhibition Work, Photograph

In Kato Takashi's photo works, we witness the curious encounters with a person and the things. The person is always kato himself, decidedly putting on nothing but the gray underwear, and the things having contact with him are always the commodities we can easily find in our daily life. What makes us feel strange, often to the degree that makes us very anxious, is the way he touches these things. The relation he makes with the object is beyond our imagination and does not give us any clue for interpretation or sympathy. But curiously again, these scenes appear very calm, and full of conviction, as if the distinction between a human being and the object has dissolved, and everything is closely assembled to compose the beauty of the still life.

Formally He made all these works alone in his own private room, and that "lonesomeness" might have been the important element of his world of "still life". However, in recent works he has come to try the new procedure, with which he must become aware of the other persons. At Nakanojo Biennale 2013 and 2015, He exhibited his photo works in old hot-spring resort using the abandoned things of closed shops. Thus the character of the location and the people who lives there comes to affect his works.

This time He tries another type of expression by choosing the new location - a hotel room. The room where he can stay in perfect privacy for some time, but also the room which he can never possess as his own residence. There he would never be free from feeling the existence of two kind of strangers - some one who prepared the room for him and some one who has stayed, or would stay there.
