Toward the Opening of “Robert Kushner: Tenderness and Thorns” I am pleased to announce the opening of yet another exhibition––succeeding the previous year––of an artist from overseas at Hakusasonso Hashimoto Kansetsu Garden & Museum. 2015 marks the four hundredth year since Hon'ami Kōetsu was granted the territory of Takagamine by shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu. A large-scale commemoration of the four hundredth anniversary of the Rimpa school is currently taking place in Kyoto. As the first installment of the commemoration program, we will be presenting from New York, “Robert Kushner: Tenderness and Thorns.” The exhibition, which will showcase works from Kushner’s oeuvre characterized by large-scale renderings of flower and plant motifs, is sure to be an impressive sight. The supple forms of the petals and leaves that take over the entire pictorial plane and the boisterous dance of color that extend in all directions constitute a highly dynamic spatial composition and, at the same time, form a stratum of elements that produce a delicate and sensitive world. Interpretation of the Rimpa school varies from person to person however, I consider its most significant features to be essentially its simplified decorative composition and its distribution of color in different forms. Though the work of Kushner and the Rimpa school appear to be two very different forms of expression, I see the two sharing the same attitudes in terms of artistic approach. I truly hope that this exhibition will propel contemporary Japanese artists as well as artists from overseas to establish a fruitful connection in order to pioneer new advancements in the artistic sphere.
