Tezukayama Gallery is pleased to announce ‘LEE UFAN & KISHIO SUGA: Print Exhibition’ from Mon 8th - Fri 26th September 2014.

From the late 1960s to the beginning of the 1970s a group of artists working in Japan became referred to as ‘Mono-ha’, loosely translated as ‘The School of Things’. At the centre of this “school” was a relatively small but diverse group of artists exploring the interdependent relationships between ‘things’, often natural, and the space, environments and actions around them. Two of the leading artists of Mono-ha are Lee Ufan and Kishio Suga.

Always an important and influential movement within Japan, in recent years, Mono-ha has been the subject of great interest and focus outside of Japan also. Despite it’s reawakened interest, you might feel that the philosophy and principles of Mono-ha are still difficult to understand. For this very reason, we have decided to focus on this movement and will exhibit several works from Mono-ha’s leading artists, Lee Ufan and Kishio Suga. We will exhibit one of Lee Ufan’s most important series ‘From Point From Line’, a set of 8 lithograph prints from 1977, along with a selection of his oil paintings and drawings. We will also exhibit, from Kishio Suga, 10 rare woodcut prints, which are an edition of 10.

We invite you to enjoy this exhibition of work from these leading Mono-ha artists, and by viewing this collection gain an understanding of the philosophy of Mono-ha.
