This exhibition introduces young designers who have developed their own unique creativity within the context of the Tokyo fashion scene and designed the reality of the 2000s in Japan. Maintaining a distance from 'trends' manufactured by the mass media, they have explored their individual views of reality, took meticulous care over materials and styles, and instead of just creating apparel, have been active in multiple areas, actively indulging in interplay with fields other than fashion. An ability to sense the atmosphere of transformation in society underlies the approaches taken by these designers, and they seem to share an attitude of exploring approaches to fashion without becoming trapped by stereotypes and fixed ideas. Considering fashion to be a cultural phenomenon full of creativity, the aim of this exhibition is to present new approaches to fashion design that can be seen in the ideas produced by Japanese designers in the 21st century. * The text provided by Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery.
