Untitled, from the series of Illuminance, 2009 Solo exhibition of Rinko Kawauchi, celebrating publication of her same titled monograph, which covers comprehensive works Kawauchi has been photographing over 15 years. 10 years from the simultaneous publication of her three books UTATANE, HANABI, HANAKO - co-publishing with American publisher Aperture, Illuminance book presents new endeavor of Kawauchi, compiling essence of her photographs taken over 15 years, as if condensing, then further sublimating the world of UTATANE. To come up with international aspiration for Kawauchi's new work, this photo book Illuminance has been published in 5 different countries. In this series of Illuminance, Rinko Kawauchi carefully takes up details of subjects and captures fragments of beauty, at the same time, also of sorrow, which lurks in the beauty. Light and darkness, life and death - illuminated by Kawauchi, our world exposes various expression and it's fundamental, universal and sublime connotations, transcending limitation of time or places. Quietly but nobly, Illuminance will appeal to our mind to open the door for the new world. In this exhibition, about 50 pieces of her photographic works from this Illuminance series as well as some pictures taken along side the production of this series will be on view. In abroad, she is currently holding solo exhibition Illuminance at Gallery at Hermes (NY) and murmuration at Rose Gallery (LA), and is to participate in Le Mois de la Photo a Montreal in this autumn. This exhibition Illuminance will be first exhibition in Tokyo after 3 years, of internationally acclaimed photographer, Rinko Kawauchi.
