Once, in Japan, there were creatures and monsters, which existed as exteriorizations of omens as a warning to humans.
People believed so.
Unnoticeably, these creatures became a subject of natural history, and lost their mystique. Resisting to a desire of investigation of the everyday phenomenon surrounding us, there must be needs of something vague that we cannot understand and something mysterious.
There must be something that we only can feel with piety and imagination.
In the first solo exhibition in 2007, Kato presented paintings of hybrid creatures, showcasing crossbred plants, birds and life from the ocean and so on. In the intervening two years, these mysterious hybrid creatures have gone through another 'metamorphosis' within either degeneration or evolution and formed a transcendent existence, appearing on Kato's canvas from as if from another world.
