Why ‘Beauty’? II

Instincts of reproduction and existence of human beings create ‘power’, and this ‘power’ permeates into every corner of human society. It is controlling us completely. Nuclear weapons, bio-technology, information technology... the ‘power’ may gradually destroy ourselves. Shunichi Hosoya puts the ‘beauty’ on the extreme opposite to the ‘power’ for this reason.

He calls his creative principle for the beauty ‘anti-Euclideanism’. Here Euclideanism is not just a specific geometric principle but it is modernistic thoughts and ways in general that explain and control this physical world. In his drawings we can find straight lines, curved lines and countless dots. These are not to indicate our comprehension of the familiar shapes or spaces, nor our sense of perspectives. But it can be seen as the tracks that his metaphysical minds have made by trying to approach the absolute beauty on the real two-dimensional world. Hosoya believes the act that was cut down to its limit in order to tell what cannot be told is the actual way closer to the humans’ highest value, the ‘beauty’.
